Carricante

Carricante is an ancient indigenous grape variety of Etna and a true symbol of the area’s traditional viticulture.

Until the 1950s, it was the most widespread white grape variety in the province of Catania. Its name reflects the plant’s ability to “load” the vine with abundant clusters.
This variety has particularly thrived on the eastern slopes of Etna, favoring higher-altitude districts.

Here, Carricante fully expresses its potential, producing wines with unmistakable characteristics: high fixed acidity, an exceptionally low pH (ranging between 2.9 and 3.0), and a notable malic acid content. Wines made from Carricante are renowned for their freshness, longevity, and strong sense of place, making them ideal representatives of Etna’s unique terroir.

Nerello Mascalese

Nerello Mascalese is the most widely cultivated grape variety on the slopes of Etna, representing one of the most iconic varieties of the region. It is known for being challenging to grow, often compared to Nebbiolo for its late ripening (typically in the second half of October) and to Pinot Noir for its strong sensitivity to vintage and terroir. The clusters are long, moderately compact, and often characterized by prominent wings. The berries have a thick skin and a light blue hue.

The variety is distinguished by a medium bud break and late harvest period, which contribute to its unique character. Wines made from Nerello Mascalese are noted for good alcohol content, high total acidity, and a pale ruby-red color. On the nose, they reveal intense fruity aromas, accompanied by ethereal notes and a pronounced minerality. On the palate, they are refined, with medium structure and remarkable elegance, making them particularly captivating and sophisticated.
